How Sunlight kills bacteria in drinking water

SODIS (Solar Water Disinfection) cleans water in 5 hours, ideal to disinfect small quantities of water used for consumption. AND, … it is so simple everyone could have discovered it and even better, it is so cheap that everyone can do it and buy it. Because it is that simple, many believe it is not true.

The information of this method and official test results come from the SODIS home page which you can find here: SODIS

Paint one half of a transparent bottle black and fill it with contaminated water (water with bacteria). Place this bottle for a minimum of 5 hours in the burning sun and after 5 hours, the water is purified and safe to drink.

During cloudy conditions this method takes 2 consecutive days.

Two factors combined are the foundation of this cleaning procedure; infrared and ultra violet radiation of the sun. Infrared heats the water and UV-radiation destroys micro-organisms (bacteria) in contaminated water that causes diarrhoea and living in human’s stomach and intestines (disinfections). The black paint increases the heat of the water in the bottle to above 50ºC (pasteurisation). The drinking water situation is precarious in numerous developing countries as more than one third of the rural population has no access to sufficient and clean water. Diarrhoeal diseases may be transmitted through contaminated drinking water and cause the death of over three million people annually. Solar water disinfection (SODIS) can contribute to improve this precarious situation.
